Boats are in my blood

OK, not literally, but…

I’ve spent my whole life in and around boats. My Navy veteran father taught me the basics of seamanship. I continued to learn first hand in my own sailboat that I bought when I was 14.

I later worked as a marine mechanic on seafood processing barges in Alaska. I kept skiffs, refrigeration units, water systems, hydraulic units, and other machines running and made repairs. These skills have come in handy more than once since then.

In the off-season, I’d return to Washington State. There I learned how to not make money commercial fishing when my buddy and I bought an old boat and fished with it in Puget Sound. I got an advanced education in seamanship, navigation, and maintaining an old vessel out of the experience, though. The adventure was well worth it.

Recent adventures

These days, I work as a freelance writer and university English teacher. I still spend my time off in boats whenever possible. I charter sailboats with my ASA Day Skipper certificate, scuba dive as a PADI certified Advanced Open Water diver, and play around in fishing boats, sea kayaks, and river rafts.

Future focus

As a former builder, I appreciate of the lines of historic wooden hulls. I’m also fascinated with modern innovations like composite construction, hydrofoils, and clean energy propulsion. I’m excited to see how technology is transforming modern vessels.
