I eat insects. And I love them!
Now this didn’t come naturally. I’m grew up in California. Bugs are not part of our cuisine.
Eating insects is becoming more popular in Western countries these days because of the many environmental and health benefits.
But I got into this whole idea of eating bugs from a different avenue. I got into it because I’m a foodie.
(Actually, it took a dare to get me started, but that’s a story for another time.)
A foodie tries bugs
My first experience eating insects was in Thailand. I tried an assortment of fried bugs. I was blown away by the variety of flavors. My foodie senses lit up with pleasure.
One of the bugs was crunchy and didn’t have a lot of flavor, but was a great vehicle for oil and salt, much like a potato chip. Another one wasn’t that good, but was tolerable.
And then there was that big one that tasted like shrimp. That’s when I got it.
I’ve been a huge fan of edible insects ever since.
I love to experience new flavors and textures in my food. It’s one of my favorite things to do when I travel. Eating insects opened up a whole new world of tastes and textures that I never knew existed back home.
My favorites insects in Thailand
- “maeng da” (Lethocerus indicus, a giant water bug), which have a fruity aroma and are used in spicy dipping sauces
- silk worm pupae (the best beer snacks!)
- “maeng kaeng” (Tessaratoma papillota), which taste exactly like American “Red Hots” candy – spicy cinnamon – when eaten raw
I also enjoy several different species of crickets, and a variety of other bugs that I don’t know the names for. All highly recommended!
Now I’m happy to try any new edible insect I can in order to experience new flavors.
Why is this important to you?
If you’re a producer or seller of edible insects, I’m already a big fan of your product. I’m a supporter of the entomophagy industry for its environmental and health benefits, and a regular consumer of this tasty food.
